Do you ever remember it being cold outside and putting a towel by the door to stop the cold air from coming in? Ever remember your parents saying close my door you're running up my electric bill? Humorous but true. When you set your thermostat at a desired temperature, your AC and Heating unit works very hard to reach that desired temperature for you.
Sometimes you have so much Air Loss in so many different places of your home the unit can never hit the temperature you desire.
When it finally cuts off, listen to how long it takes to cut right back on.
What's actually happening is it finally hit the desired temperature, however due to many air leaks the AC/Heating Unit cuts right back on working overtime increasing your utility bill.
Simply put. The less Air Loss you have the more Money you Save!
Note #1: Cold Air gets sucked into the home through air leaks in the winter time.
Note #2: Cold Air is pulled out of your home through air leaks in the summer time.
Note #3: Your AC/Heating System consumes the most power in your home.
Note #4: Electric Heating consumes more power than your AC Unit.
Some companies offer Complimentary Blower Door Test to help determine how efficient or inefficient your home is. They will then Air Seal your home helping to create a cleaner more comfortable environment, ultimately lowering your utility bill even more.
You can feel the results immediately after a home has been properly Air Sealed and Insulated.
Ultimately the choice is yours, both options below are better than doing nothing...
Lease Benefits
When you lease a system you do not need to take out a loan and you start saving money from day 1, Sometimes you don't even have to use your credit or income to obtain the solar system.
You don't own the solar system so you do Not receive a Federal Tax Credit.
However, you do start saving money immediately because you didn't have to put up any money.to acquire the system. You do not interfere with your debt to income ratio because it's not on your credit. You have a lower monthly payment with a lease than if you purchase.
At the end of the lease you do have options to own the system. Some companies give you the option as early as 6 years.
You can also upgrade to a new system or have the system removed at not cost to you.
If you sell your home the new homeowner simply takes over the lease payments where you left off or have them removed for a service fee.
If you die, the new property owner has the option to take over the lease where you left off or have the system removed.
Purchase Benefits
When you've taken out a loan or have paid cash for your new solar system you can apply for the 30% Federal Income Tax Credit to help lower your overall expense.
Payments are normally higher because of interest rates.
Everyone does not qualify. because you can only file for what you paid in Federal Taxes..
The Federal Tax Credit can be claimed for 7 years.
Example: A $30,000 Loan would qualify for a $9,000 Federal Income Tax Credit.
You'd have a monthly payment of about $198 for 25 Years assuming you receive the full $9,000 Tax Credit to reduce your balance to $21,000. Most loan companies give you18 Months to When you receive your money you are to forward the funds to your loan company to satisfy the terms of your agreement and keep the payment of $198 per month.
Your refund is not automatically sent to your loan company, you have to send it to them.
If you do not send them $9,000 within 18 Months, your payment will be reset at about $283 based on a balance of $30,000. Most companies will adjust your payment based on any amount you send in during the first 18 Months just incase you didn't qualify for the full amount the first year. You can then receive the balance of your refund over the next 6 years if you pay enough in Federal Income Taxes.
You are purchasing power from your utility company just like you purchase gas from a gas station. Prices go up and down the same way and you have no control over it. The more Kilowatts you use the higher your electric bill will be. Most utility company's have an additional Energy Charge. This is where an additional monthly amount is added to your bill based on increases or decreases in power cost that month. Producing some of your own power at home helps reduce the amount of power you have to buy from your utility company. It helps reduce your overall cost because you're purchasing less power from them.
Federal Tax Credits (ITC) are designed to help reduce the overall cost for the solar system you purchased. It is Not a Grant. Grants are sources of free money that do not have to be repaid.
The Solar Tax Credit (ITC) is a Refund on the FEDERAL Income Taxes that you paid in.
The current Federal Tax Credit is at 30% of your total purchase price as of 2023.
You have to meet certain tax requirements to qualify.
Retail Net Metering with your utility company allows you to sell Excess Power generated by your solar system back to your utility company at their Retail Rate. Some call it Dollar for Dollar. When it's installed, you get Grandfathered In. It stays with the property and you'll enjoy selling power back to your utility company for the rest of your life.
As utility rates rise, the benefits of selling power back to your utility company at increased prices will save you even more money on your utility bill.
Example #1
If you use 1200kw from your Utility Company but your Solar System sends 800kw back to the grid. You only get billed for using 400kw that month.
Example #2
You use 900kw from your utility company but your solar system produces 1400kw.
They take 900kw from your 1400kw to Zero your Kw usage that month.
They then allow 500kw to roll over to your next month reducing your bill even more.
You'll receive a minimum bill that month.
Utility Companies don't have to do this and the ones that do deserve to be commended because they're supporting you 100%.
However, they reserve the right to stop issuing Retail Net Meters whenever they choose to.
Entergy New Orleans is the only Utility Company in Louisiana that still offers
Retail Net Metering to it's residents. Act Now!
One-time Installation Fees can range from $50 - $100 depending on the utility company.
If you currently own a Retail Net Meter you're grandfathered in.
Note: You Do Not receive a check from your utility company. It's credits on your electric bill.
It depends on how many appliances / electronics you want to run and the size of your battery.
Solar Batteries can run your home daily at nighttime reducing your overall energy cost.
You actually pick which breakers you'd like your Solar Battery to run.
Your Solar Battery Installer will then wire those breakers so your Solar Battery will run them in the event of a power outage. The amount of breakers you can run will depend on the size of your battery.
Typically a small 6500 Watt Solar Battery can run 5-8 individual 15-20 Amp breakers.
You and your Solar Battery Installer will be making that decision together.
With Federal Tax Incentives available and daily nighttime usage, Solar Batteries actually pay for themselves over time.
The typical monthly payment for a small Solar Battery is @ $80 per month for 10 years.
Generators are designed to run your home during a power outage only.
Running Off Grid forever is not allowed in most areas that already have existing public utility companies to provide service to you.
However, it's commonly allowed in remote areas where there are no public utility companies available.
Note: All Electric homes require more Kilowatts to run them than Electric and Gas homes.
Consult with a professional.
Comfortable Quiet Operation - No Refueling Required - 30% Federal Tax Credit Available
Solar Batteries are designed to start saving you money from the moment they're turned on. This is because they're not just running in the event of a power outage they're running all the time when needed. They also lower your electric bill because you're not drawing power from your utility company when you're using your battery.
The bigger the battery the more hours of usage you have.
When the Sun rises your Solar Panels start running your home again. When your Batteries sense there's not enough sunlight available they turn on again to give you the difference in power required run your home.
HVAC Management and Energy Efficiency is the key to extended hours of battery operation.
HVAC Systems require a lot of continuous power to run them.
Consult with a professional.
Continuous Power - Loud - Maintenance Required - Charges From Your Natural Gas Company
Fixed Generators provide continuous power normally about 4 days or 96 hours.
When you connect a Fixed Generator you don't recoup your investment because they only cut on in the event of a power outage. However, you don't have to run back and forth to the gas station or change propane tanks when they operate of a continuous flow of natural gas. You have to be prepared for a larger Natural Gas Bill at the end of the month depending on how long it ran.
Oil changes must be performed every 50 - 200 Hours of operation depending on size.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is a valid concern with Generators so the must be placed a safe distance away from your home.
Temporary Power - Loud - Refueling & Oli Changes Required - Least Expensive Option
Portable Generators are excellent to solve a temporary problem in the event of a power outage. They're mobile but must be placed at least 20 Feet away from your home to protect your family from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. You have to continuously refuel them with Gasoline, Propane or both.
Oil changes must be performed every 50 - 200 Hours of operation depending on size.
Some people try to use them to back feed their Electric Panel which we Highly Do Not Recommend.
There are so many dangers with doing this up to electrocuting a lineman working on a power line trying to restore power in your area. You absolutely do not want that problem. It's not worth it.
Consider a Fixed Generator or Solar Battery. The choice is yours.
Your Insurance Adjuster will come out to asses your damages but you won't receive a dollar amount at that time.
The pictures taken will be given to a Desk Adjuster that will call and communicate the dollar amount associated with your claim minus your Deductible.
How Deductibles Work?
A Named Storm = up to 5% of your policy amount for most Insurance Carriers.
If your Policy Amount is $150,000 your 5% Deductible will be $7,500
Roofing Claim Example:
$9,700 Claim - $7,500 Deductible = A $2.200 check to fix your $9,700 dollar roof.
It's not unfair, It's just how it works. You have Auto Insurance Deductibles for your car remember?
When the deductible is removed the difference is yours.
Insurance Companies are heavily regulated and will work on your behalf to make you whole.
Always consult with your carrier. They have the final say.
This is just an example to help explain how it works.
